Every year, the French American School of New York (FASNY) hosts a book fair. It is an event in which thousands of students, parents, and community residents assemble at the FASNY High School to purchase various types of books. This year, I had the opportunity to present my initiative to the Mamaroneck Community in partnership with Social Watch Africa (SOWA) to help Anyrwase Methodist KG and Primary School remake their classroom, a school with 45 kids and two classrooms.

I set up a table at the book fair with various school supplies donated by the Larchmont Futterman's Stationery shop for children in Ghana. I have decided to sell one part of the supplies to raise money to purchase furniture to make the classroom a pleasant environment to learn.

The fact that some individuals would stroll by startled me a little. Certain people were interested in learning more about the initiative, while others would state, "I don't need any supplies," and walk away.

Others contributed more than expected and congratulated me on the project.

A video of a tour around Anywarse Methodist School was constantly playing which attracted many children. This was a great marketing strategy skill as kids were interested in watching the video which would lead them to bring their parents to buy something.

The supplies were low priced, which I hoped would attract more customers. But, as I've observed in the past, seasons and patterns influence sales. Because school had already begun and parents had already spent hundreds of dollars on new supplies, it was challenging to convince them to spend more.

I have learned about customers and how to approach them. I was supported by two of my friends who distributed fliers that I made, talking to people and encouraging them to visit my Social Watch Africa corner.

All in all, it was a fantastic learning opportunity. It was important to approach people in a friendly and genuinely to captivate their interest. Facial expression and overall appearance also play a big role.

During the 2 days, no matter the challenges and the long hours spent at the fair, I remained focused and determined to gather as many funds as possible for my little friends in Ghana.

I am grateful for the opportunity the organizers have given me and I am looking forward to volunteering again next year.
